Your customers are your business’s greatest asset. Not only are they the reason you step into the office every day, but they can help your grow your business if you let them. Today, businesses are taking a much more personal approach to how they interact with customers. The massive growth in social media has truly spurred this trend and will only continue to do so.
From different social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook to your blog and personalized photography instead of stock images on your website, businesses everywhere are looking to make an even deeper personal connection with customers simply by showing off who they are.
Here are three ways that customers can help you grow your business:
- Ask them what they want, and then listen. Taking the time to start a dialogue with your customers to find out what they like, don’t like, wish they had, and more when it comes to your business is one of the easiest ways to get insight into you customers. They will often openly share with you anything you want to know. Take their advice by listening and acting on their feedback.
- Learn as much as you can and anticipate their needs. Spend time really getting to know your customers by interacting through social media, blogging, events, and more. When you take the time to learn as much as you can about your customer base, you’ll be able to anticipate their needs and fully meet their expectations.
- If you make a mistake, they’ll let you know it. Every business will make a mistake here and there; use these misfortunes as another learning experience. Your customers will find one way or another to let you know you’ve made an error they’re not pleased about. Always address these issues right away with tact and patience. Learn from the mistake and what your customers expect of you.

Whether you’re the chief marketing officer of your company or you work for an agency with clients, you’re going to need to be measuring the return on investment (ROI) of your marketing campaigns. All campaigns need to be measured differently based on marketing goals and some are much easier to track than others. Before you consider how you will track ROI, you must first take into consideration your goals, budgets, and how you will handle reallocating funds if campaigns are not producing the results you intended. Last month we blogged about social media etiquette for your business, this month we decided we would touch upon another important area to practice proper politeness: email marketing etiquette. We’ve all had our inboxes spammed at one point or another, found it impossible to unsubscribe from emails, or been unimpressed with glaring spelling errors. This can be frustrating and often results in a customer assuming a negative relationship with a company, and even worse, opting-out of emails all together.
Aside from the obvious negative effects of spamming someone’s email, there are numerous other ways that you can turn away a customer from email marketing if you are not careful. Take a look at these email marketing etiquette tips your business should know for better results and happier customers:
- Get recipient permission. The best way to build an email marketing list, while following proper email marketing etiquette, is organically. Have sign-up options on your website, landing pages, advertising initiatives, and more. You will turn better results if you’re emailing people who actually want to receive your emails.
- Make it easy to unsubscribe. Email marketing etiquette isn’t just about getting permission to start sending emails in the first place: if customers want to opt-out of receiving your emails, make it easy for them. Provide a link in all of your emails, or if they email your personally, respond and let them know you will remove them from your list immediately.
- Proof and test all emails. If you’re sending emails with text errors and broken links, you will not impress your customers. Take the time to proof you emails. Having multiple sets of eyes always helps. Also, remember to test all of your emails before they are sent out to customers. Remember, proper email marketing etiquette!
- Segment your recipient list. By segmenting your email list, you make it so you can personalize your customers’ experience by location, industry, previous purchasing history, and more. This will add to the effectiveness of your campaigns by allowing you to send emails that truly pertain to your recipients’ needs and interests.
- Don’t spam your contacts. Think about how much you dislike receiving dozens and dozens of emails from one company. Don’t do it to your customers. Spamming is just bad email marketing etiquette, no questions asked. Remember to keep spam trigger words in mind when developing your emails.
- Make it mobile-friendly. With 43% of emails being open on a mobile device, according to Constant Contact, it’s more important than ever to make your emails mobile-friendly for a better user experience.

We all know about email marketing, our inboxes typically pile up with emails from this company and that company, and that store you love to shop in so much. Now think about which emails you typically open. They almost always have the same thing in common, they’re targeted. Companies take advantage of list segmentation in email marketing to do this.
According to MailChimp, an email marketing service provider, segmented email marketing campaigns had a 14.444% better open rate than the list average and 14.994% better click-through rate. When you start utilizing segmentation in email marketing, you will be able to better target customers with information and valuable resources that are of interest to them, which will, in turn, increase your success.
Here are some of the most important reasons why you should begin incorporating list segmentation in email marketing strategies going forward:
Your customers are all different.
More often than not, companies have different target audiences that appeal to a variety of different products and services. Using list segmentation in email marketing campaigns will help you identify these differences and provide customers with the information and opportunities they’re looking for.
It will improve your credibility.
When you are being thoughtful and methodical about how, when, and what you email to your contacts, it will automatically improve your credibility. No one likes to be spammed, and if you do it, customers will often discredit your business and view you as unprofessional.
You will be able to send more targeted emails.
Having a segmented list will allow you to breakdown your customer base by prior interests or purchases, location, industry, and more. The ways to segment your lists are endless so work on developing a strategy that best suits your business.
It will boost your success rates.
Statistics show that having a segmentation in email marketing lists improves your open and click-through rates (CTRs) while lowering your bounce rates. However, keep in mind that segmented lists are only part of the equation. You need to consider your message and your call-to-action.
