Unique. That is the word I would use to describe what it is like working in a marketing agency. My name is Alison DeLeo, and I’m a Senior Account Manager here at Millennium Agency. As an Account Manager at Millennium, my main job is communicating with the clients, ensuring deadlines and client satisfaction as well as leading projects from kickoff to completion.
I got my start in the marketing world working in the digital media/buying field for a large corporate agency in downtown Boston, Massachusetts. Working for a large global agency was an experience, to say the least. It was my first job out of college, and I was thrown right into the fire of marketing. From doing client calls and presentations, negotiating with vendors and creating media plans to leading internal meetings – as an Assistant Digital Media Planner, I was learning more than I could have ever thought. But I also learned how unique, crazy, exciting and stressful life was working in an agency. You essentially feel all of the emotions throughout your career in an agency.
I quickly learned that the corporate agency wasn’t for me. Aside from the Chipotle catering. Overall, it was a great experience, I learned a lot and I wouldn’t have changed a thing– but I knew that this wasn’t the environment for me and a place that I would strive in.
After making the switch going from a large 500+ person agency to a small 15+ agency – I knew I found the right environment for me. When I jumped agencies, I also jumped career paths. From working strictly in digital, I made the move to Account Management. I’ve always enjoyed building relationships with clients, working out problems and helping provide the client with amazing work. I’ve always had that Type-A personality and Account Management is the perfect placement for those with such a strict and organized personality.
Working at Millennium has been a brand-new experience and a complete 180 from what I was used to. I’ve been here for just about a year and I’ve learned that one of the greatest benefits of non-corporate agencies is the close partnerships and how personal the work is compared to the corporate life. I feel like the work we do here is in a way, more important, because of the relationships we have with our clients. We take care of our clients and treat them as family – instead of just another client on the agency list.
Overall, if you are looking for a career that teaches you more than you could ever expect, tests you in all aspects – including your ping pong skills, introduces you to new alcoholic beverages with the in-house wine and beer fridges, and allows you to do work that really matters, than maybe working in an agency is for you.
